Buyer’s Guide

How to Choose a Hearing Supplement

Hearing supplements represent one of the more overpromised niches in the supplement industry. These guidelines help identify credible products.

1

Set Realistic Expectations

No supplement has been proven to reverse significant hearing loss. The strongest evidence supports protecting existing hearing function and supporting circulation to the auditory system.

2

Evaluate Ginkgo Biloba Quality

Ginkgo biloba standardised to 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones at 120–240mg/day has the most clinical study for tinnitus. Unstandardised ginkgo is less reliable.

3

Check Magnesium and Zinc Levels

Both minerals are associated with noise-induced hearing protection. Look for magnesium at 200–400mg and zinc at 10–25mg in elemental form.

4

Look for Antioxidant Compounds

Oxidative stress plays a role in auditory cell damage. Supplements including N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, or CoQ10 add antioxidant protection.

5

Be Wary of Miracle Claims

Hearing support is a category with significant marketing exaggeration. Treat any product claiming to 'restore' hearing with significant scepticism.
